Atif Toor
Atif Toor is a New York based artist and creative director. In his artistic practice, he seeks transcendence through engaging with the inherent qualities embedded in materials—the wet-on-wet mingling of sumi ink and water on paper, monoprints that emerge from lines carved through thick coats of paint, the luminous quality of pigment suspended in wax through encaustic painting, or the tactile intimacy of charcoal on newsprint while observing the figure.
His mixed media works explore the interplay of positive and negative space through lyrical forms while drawing inspiration from action painting, automatism, and abstract expressionism. They are a synthesis of his meditation practice and his interest in activating every inch of the surface through the language of line, color, form, and texture.
A graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, he has worked as a creative director for over 20 years, primarily in not-for-profit and cultural spaces including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Aga Khan Museum, and the Institute of International Education. He is currently creative director at amfAR, the Foundation for AIDS Research. He has participated in group exhibitions in New York and Rhode Island.
